'कृं कृष्णाय नमः', (मनोवांछित फल की प्राप्ति कराते हैं कृष्ण मंत्र , पढ़ें कृष्ण-मंत्र और उनके प्रयोग) भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के जन्मोत्सव का दिन बड़ी धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है। कृष्ण जन्मभूमि पर देश–विदेश से लाखों श्रद्धालुओं की भीड़ उमड़ती है और पूरे दिन व्रत रखकर नर-नारी तथा बच्चे रात्रि 12 बजे मन्दिरों में अभिषेक होने पर पंचामृत ग्रहण कर व्रत खोलते हैं। कृष्ण जन्मभूमि के अलावा द्वारकाधीश, बिहारीजी एवं अन्य सभी मन्दिरों में इसका भव्य आयोजन होता है, जिनमें भारी भीड़ होती है। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण विष्णुजी के आठवें अवतार माने जाते हैं। यह श्रीविष्णु का सोलह कलाओं से पूर्ण भव्यतम अवतार है। श्रीराम तो राजा दशरथ के यहाँ एक राजकुमार के रूप में अवतरित हुए थे, जबकि श्रीकृष्ण का प्राकट्य आततायी कंस के कारागार में हुआ था। श्रीकृष्ण का जन्म भाद्रपद कृष्ण अष्टमी की मध्यरात्रि को रोहिणी नक्षत्र में देवकी व श्रीवसुदेव के पुत्ररूप में हुआ था।

In this region, a common custom is the performance of Krishna Lila, a folk drama consisting of scenes from Krishna's life. Many customs have developed in the different parts of India, all based on stories from Krishna's life. For instance, it is said that as a boy, Krishna loved butter and milk so much that they had to be kept out of his reach. This story is reflected in many climbing games for children.
